Search for Indies!
There is an iPhone app for just about everything and now you can search specifically for independent retailers by location. High street and department stores are ignored and only independent stores are featured. This is great for smaller boutiques who can separate themselves from the larger competitors and great for customers who are looking for something different. The app had been launched by Margin...
"Independent stores are a vital part of the retail landscape. They're the stores that pick up on new designers first, at least two years before department stores and corporate multiples, and they bring excitement to shopping, as well as personable customer service. After hunting through iTunes, I couldn't believe there wasn't a dedicated iphone app promoting these forward-thinking boutiques in a credible or helpful way to assist shoppers in tracking down these great stores."
The individual stores can apply online to be featured in the app, which is a great marketing tool.

Young Ideas
Sorry I haven't posted for a while...excitement of Christmas/moving home! Today I visited Young Ideas in Ashbourne and interviewed the owner, Anne Wright. She was very lovely and helpful and gave me a really good insight into the boutique business and how she stays ahead of competitors. I especially like her commitment to offering consumers only the very BEST collections and the events and showcases in which she engages with her consumers. It gave me some great ideas for my project. As for the shop...I will definitely be re-visiting when I have some money!!

Style Advice

So many times you see a gorgeous outfit on display from a particular brand but its recreating the look that can be the tricky part. That's why I love the style advice some clothing retailers give. It really helps you engage with the brand and feel like you can look like their models...if only for a moment! With so many blogs and street style pages I think brands need to go further than simple advertisements and e-commerce sites and this attracts attention and shows they are serious about style.
Here are a few of my favourite wintery ones from online (mainly Topshop and ASOS!).

Celebrity (well Cheryl Cole) Style!

My on-going consumer research is showing that celebrity style is still a major source for fashion advice and inspiration. Most female fashion websites and magazines comment on who's wearing what and where to buy it.When I say celebrity style, I pretty much mean Cheryl Cole style! Her clothing seems to be the focus because everyone wants to look like her!
These pictures are from The Dressing Room boutique and have been posted on their Facebook page. Celebrities tend to wear individual and new brands which boutiques stock and it's a great way for smaller retailers to advertise their niche collections and attract consumer attention away from the high street.
First and last images ChloBo.

Unique Selling Points!

As a small independent retailer its sometimes difficult to make your mark amongst the large high street chains. Which is why it is so important to stand out and offer something unique. From my research I've discovered that this is often achieved through bespoke accessories. Two boutiques I've looked at, Collard Manson and Eternal Envy, sell individual pieces to offer their consumer something a little different. And this is the reason people shop in boutiques, to get away from fast fashion.
Collard Manson has its own range of beautiful bags and purses and Eternal Envy sell locally sourced and bespoke accessories.
